Abstract

This paper assesses the geometric layout of the El Aguador elliptical roundabout intersection located in the city of Machala. The geometric design of road intersections plays a fundamental role in operational efficiency and vehicular traffic safety. The assessment is governed by the regulations applicable to the design of roundabout-type intersections, verifying that each of the geometric elements of the road infrastructure complies with established safety and functionality parameters. The object of study has the particularity of having an elliptical central island, which leads to a detailed evaluation of its design. Thus, based on these particularities, a combination of regulations and layouts is carried out using devices and a proportionality method, which helps provide the ideal measures to guarantee correct operation, efficiency, and performance of the roundabout. The assessment identified nonconformities with respect to current regulatory parameters, and a design for the El Aguador roundabout is proposed to guarantee road safety and efficient vehicular flow.
