Abstract

Promoting the use of the wind in Cuba with a multidisciplinary and scientific approach is of paramount importance for contemporary society. This constitutes a high-value resource, so its efficient management can contribute to improving the quality of life of the population and mitigate economic and social damage.

Wind engineering, in recent decades, has achieved a good development at the international level and within it, the experimental field acquires enormous importance. One of the most powerful tools used are wind tunnels. These allow, through scale models and wind simulation, to study the interaction between them. The models can be of both man-made spaces and nature.

The strong winds that systematically hit the national territory have driven the development of programs and strategies that today show excellent results in terms of hazard, vulnerability and risk (PVR) studies. However, even the experimental branch does not have an adequate development since Cuba does not have an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel. If one is built, it would be the first of its kind in the Caribbean region.

The Technological University of Havana, ¨José Antonio Echeverría¨, Cujae, has worked on the idea of building an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel that allows the implementation of studies of such magnitude in Cuba. This work bases the need to have this tool and the most presented project for its construction is exposed
