INFLUENCE OF THE NUMERICAL MODEL OF THE FOUNDATION IN REINFORCED CONCRETE FRAMEWORK STRUCTURES
Keywords:
Soil-structure interaction, soil stiffness modulus, foundations, structural analysisAbstract
Due to the uncertainty associated with the numerical model of the foundation to the structures, they are analyzed considering perfect embedment between the ground and the base of the columns, such a model does not approach reality since the ground does not have infinite stiffness. When the perfect embedment condition is not met, the additional displacements that occur at the base of the foundation induce a different behavior than expected for the embedded structure. In addition to this, there are different criteria on the level at which embedment should be considered, and if the translational or rotational stiffness of the soil is incorporated into the analysis, there are different alternatives or methodologies to estimate these stiffnesses. Computational models of this work indicate that the soil-structure interaction directly affects the dynamic behavior of the structures. Modeling with embedments at the base is accepted, however, it is recommended to incorporate the stiffness of the soil. It is recommended to use the soil stiffness modulus as it influences floor drifts. Mathematical models with embedment at the base are more conservative when designing structural elements.
